After a week of teasing fans, Canadian singer The Weeknd has just dropped the adrenaline-filled music video for one his latest singles “Blinding Lights”. The single was one of two songs released last November after announcing his return to music.
The video is a departure from past music videos as it trades in the typical slow pace and darker tones for fighting, a lot of blood, high-speed driving and vibrant colours. However, it does mirror themes to his video from his 2019 companion single “Heartless”.
Directed by Anton Tammi, both videos take place in Las Vegas with a lot of acting from The Weeknd. “Blinding Lights” appears to pick up where “Heartless” left off, covering the aftermath of his previous antics.
The song debuted and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December. It had also made it to number two on the Canadian Hot 100. As of today, “Blinding Lights” has nearly doubled the daily streams of “Heartless” on Spotify.
Both singles are expected to be featured on his upcoming album. While the title of his sixth album has yet to be confirmed, The Weeknd has referred to it as “Chapter VI”. When asked on Twitter in December whether he’s ever planning to release the album, he replied, “of course I am eventually”.
There is no official release date for the next album though fans expect that it will released this year. You catch The Weeknd this Wednesday night when he performs on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
