According to the SOCAN Music Appreciation Survey, 85 percent of Canadians said that music plays an important role in their lives. What does that say? Canadian’s love music! And… they’re not so bad at creating it either.
In recent Canadian music history, artists such as Grimes, Drake, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Arcade Fire, and Metric have been internationally recognized. These artists have helped to re-invoke the world’s love for Canadian music and has allowed people to see what we can do.
The music of Neil Young, The Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, and Rush remind us of Canadian music in its heyday. These artists put Canadian music on the map and generated a huge following for artists up in the Great White North.
Canadian musical pride has continued to resonate within other artists like The Tragically Hip, Sam Roberts Band, Broken Social Scene, City and Colour, and Michael Buble. Canadian musicians creating original tracks nourishes our Canadian pride and culture and having exposure to all different kinds of international music, including our own, is crucial to that.
So, who’s up and coming? Artists like Hannah Georges, BADBADNOTGOOD, Timber Timbre, Kiesza, Tokyo Police Club, and Mac DeMarco are just a few Canadian artists who are starting to make their mark in the music industry.
