As many of you know, Toronto is a pinnacle of culture and entertainment. You have year-round access to everything from sports games to music concerts, and of course film and theatre. Many great artists and content creators have come from this city, and they have so many ways of reaching out to their fans. For people like me, some of the city’s culture is encapsulated in the podcasting and web series scene. After all, they are a great way to reach out to those who share your interests and create a fan base in a quick and efficient manner. One such series is set to hit the hallowed playlist of Apple iTunes, and it’s not even a year old.
Nerdling Rush is a weekly panel show which discusses the big stories in nerd culture. Everything from Marvel vs. DC to Pokemon. Films, TV shows, comic books and video games, and everything else in between.
But why should you be interested in this? And what’s it got to do with Humber College? Well, the three young men who put this show together are graduates of Humber’s Radio Broadcasting Program.
Dominic Dutrisac, Mohsin Mohammad, and Kenny Fowler are the brains (and nerds) responsible for this amazing program. The three were classmates of Humber’s 2015-16 Postgraduate Certificate Program. They met in September 2015 and immediately connected through their love of nerd culture just as quickly.
The three spent the year training in different radio disciplines. Kenny comes from the announcing pathway. Dom was in production. Moh studied sales and promotions. But don’t let that be your first impression. They are all great conversationalists and are highly opinionated individuals, and to top it off they all have awesome radio voices.
The show began as a class project in March of this year, but it could have been launched back in November if they wanted. Seeing as how they live nerd culture 24/7, 365 (or 366 in this case), it was only a matter of time before they would get serious and create a program like this. The show was originally produced and played on Radio Humber’s online affiliate, rH2O, but has since been available for public listening on Soundcloud. The guys produce one episode each week, taking an hour to inform and entertain the nerds and soon-to-be nerds of the world.
Thus far, they have dazzled listeners with tremendous insight and debate over two of 2016’s best superhero films: X-Men Apocalypse and Captain America: Civil War. They have also taken time to warn Pokemon: Go trainers of the incidental dangers of the popular phone app, such as not seeing where you’re walking and being wary of criminal activity instigated by fake users.
They all have a keen interest in radio, and hope to develop into a big name in the radio world one day. Whether it’s here in the GTA or anywhere across the globe, keep a lookout for these three. And who knows, maybe soon enough Nerdling Rush will be such a big hit among listeners that it will be a Top 10 on iTunes must-have podcasts of the year.
So, are you excited to see what the hype’s about? Then don’t delay. Subscribe now at https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/nerdling-rush/id1135528521?mt=2.
Tune in for the best weekly hour of nerdy knowledge that the Humber world has ever known.
