The 2-1 Toronto Argonauts’ Tailgate Parties a Summer ’16 Must

By Tamoor Hasan (@trhasan)

The Toronto Argonauts are making their home games more enjoyable than ever before. In connection to their relocation to BMO Field after 27 years in the Rogers Centre, the team is also introducing tailgating to the home game experience. It’s a great new way to hang out with your fellow fans and have an outdoor party.

Fans of the “Double Blue” already had an opportunity to experience the Argos tailgate party atmosphere when they kicked off the CFL season in style on June 23. The festivities got started in the early afternoon in the BMO Field parking lot at the Exhibition grounds, and a packed crowd of both Argos and Tigercats fans partook in the various events, such as face painting, autograph sessions, and performances by The Argonotes marching band and Argos cheerleaders.

Fans who attended the June 23 season opener were ecstatic at the opportunity to share their Argos pride with their fellow fans, and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor activities. Among those in attendance was CFL commissioner Jeffrey Orridge. He remarked, “It’s fun, it’s exciting. I’ve been here for quite some time in Toronto, and I haven’t felt a vibe like this in a long time.”

Such is the experience that fans will have the chance to immerse themselves in after every home game in the 2016 season. You get to meet some amazing people at these tailgate parties. There’s bound to be a few former players roaming around, most notably Toronto icon Michael “Pinball” Clemons.

The Argos brass are hoping to revamp their fan base with this decision. The Argos are on a current financial decline, fueled by the average Toronto sports fan’s “Big Three” mentality, in which only the Maple Leafs, Raptors, and Blue Jays seem to matter in the city’s collective sports psyche. The tailgate experience is the first to be introduced on the Canadian sports scene, and the ultimate hope is to replicate and rival the long-existent and vibrant tailgate experience of NFL fans in the U.S.

Like any good party, there are rules of conduct. You must have driven there, and the passes vary from $35 - $40. You must have a game ticket, and can bring a maximum of 10 guests. You can bring your own barbecue, but you cannot bring your own drinks. You are responsible for all belongings, including your car, and you’re welcome to leave your car overnight.
