Oh the weather outside is... not frightful?

By this time last year, we were up to our waists in snow. This year, no snow yet.

Why? Its an El Niño year. Typically, that means a mild winter for the northern part of North America, and cool and wet for southern parts of North America. So if you’re looking forward to lots of winter sports (or lazing around inside) you may have to wait.

The later half of winter (February-ish) is supposed to be more seasonal. The jet stream will dip further down and let cooler arctic air into southern Ontario. That also means there will be a better chance for a nor’easter (a weather system that blows wind from the northeast).

I bet you’re wondering why we’re getting the weather we’re getting. In the Pacific Ocean, near the equator, the water is warmer than usual. While you wouldn’t think that would effect us way up in Canada, it does.

According to The Weather Network, we are in for slightly less precipitation this year. They say to expect the usual lake effect flurries here and there.

Looks like Winter 2015/16 is going to be a mixed bag. Some mild, some snow. But one thing is for sure: we Canadians will have lots of weather to talk about.
