A great deal of magic has been lost in the world this week. With Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) first returning to the stars, another legend has joined him. British actor, Alan Rickman, passed from cancer on the morning of Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the age of 69.  Fans of his are left speechless with this unexpected news, as only his family and close friends knew the prognosis.

He stole the spotlight in everything he starred in. From his Hollywood debut as Hans Gruber in Die Hard to his depiction of Metatron the sassiest of angels in Dogma directed by Canadian, Kevin Smith.

And we can’t forget about his amazing depiction of Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise. Snape, a character that was neither good, nor bad, but described by J.K. Rowling in an interview as “complicated” was actualized and portrayed to perfection by Alan. As some of the biggest fans of the movies would say they hated Professor Snape in the earlier movies, as the stories progressed so did Snape’s and the fans grew to love him. In the end, Snape, a now beloved character by his fans, achieved the mantel of hero.

His work isn’t done yet, Alan will also be heard in the sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, in theatres later this year.

As diehard fans of Alan Rickman, this is one of the hardest blog posts we’ve ever chosen to write. How do you say goodbye to somebody that you grew up watching, to somebody who impacted you by simply playing characters? How do you comprehend the loss of someone who’s snide, snappish dialogue and body language affected us to the point of joyous laughter? From portraying angels to aliens (or at least actor playing an actor portraying an alien), to criminal masterminds and, as many fans are concerned, actually BEING Snape, how? How do you do this? We know it won’t be easy. We suffer through it, but we do it.

We marathon our favourite Rickman movies and watch the life of an amazing man.

We live up to the example that Alan has set, and strive to be as good as he was.

We celebrate a life well lived.

Finally, we salute Alan.

Wands up, wizards. Wands up.
