The University of Guelph-Humber’s annual EMERGE Conference is set to return to Humber’s North Campus on April 25. This will mark the 5th anniversary for the conference which is organized by the fourth-year media students. “Media Rehab: Reinventing the industry” will be this year’s EMERGE theme focusing on how the media can re-gaining the trust and truth that was lost overtime. Potential session ideas include “Make Media Great Again: The Media’s Role in Modern Day Politics.”

The conference brings media professionals across the industry to the university where they help motivate and share expertise with the next generation of media professionals. Last year’s EMERGE Conference was centered around “Breaking Barriers” which featured Sportsnet Central host Jackie Redmond and keynote speaker Ben Nemtin from MTV’s The Buried Life.

EMERGE is broken up over two days with the EMERGE Media Awards (EMAs) the night of April 24th, and the EMERGE Conference the following morning. This year the EMAs received a record 313 entries from 32 Universities & Colleges across Canada. The awards are given to  post-secondary students in several media categories including Public Relations, Journalism and Photography. The EMAs will take place at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall just north of the university including an elegant dinner with words from media professionals and faculty.

With 4 months to plan and approximately 170 media students, EMERGE makes up the final capstone project in their four years of education. The Media Studies Program Head Jerry Chomyn says, “We learn by working outside of our comfort zone and making mistakes. Our students get a chance to take on a major project, meet leaders in the media and achieve things they didn’t think were possible.”

EMERGE tickets are available to purchase online for $10 a piece with an Early Bird two for one discount lasting until March 19. Early Bird ticket buyers will also be entered into a contest to win a one year subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. Currently, the media students are hard at work and anxiously preparing for the EMERGE Conference and EMERGE Media Awards.
