Drake Dominates His Way to the Top

The nominees for MTV's American Music Awards were made known to the public, earlier this week by Joe Jonas and Rachel Platten, both who were also fellow nominees. Along with them, were several of Canada's best, such as Drake, Justin Bieber, The Weekend, Shawn Mendez and break out artist, Alessia Cara. 

Toronto-born Drake pilots his way through the race with a total of 13 nominations, shattering the 32-year record retained by Michael Jackson for Thriller, with 11 nominations since 1984. He is nominated for Artist of the Year, Favourite Male Artist (along with fellow Canadians - The Weekend and Justin Bieber), Favourite Album, Favourite Rap Artist, Favourite Rap Song and Favourite R&B Song along with other nominations for being featured on Rihanna’s single “Work”.

Other Canadian artists, like Justin Bieber are nominated for a sum of five awards, including Video of the Year, Favourite Album and Favourite Song.

While The Weekend is nominated for favourite Male Artist - R&B/Soul and Pop/Rock and Artist of the Year making his number of nominations to be three.

Both Shawn Mendez and Alessia Cara are nominated for New Artist of the Year.
