If you missed the 2016 Billboard Music Awards this past weekend, you might have heard about Kesha's emotional appearance or Pink’s head-turning “warrior princess” look for her performance of the single, “Just Like Fire”. But one thing you may not be aware of surrounding the Billboards this year is that they were not-so-subtly painted red and white.

It was a lucky night in Las Vegas for Canadian talent as they took home a combined total of 12 awards, one for each month our talent dominated the airwaves in the last year. The Weeknd broke the record for the most annual Billboard awards won by a male soloist, earning eight statues, including “Top Hot 100 Artist”, “Top Song Sales Artist” and “Top Streaming Songs Artist”.

The “Digit Deity” himself, Drake, took home some shine as well, winning “Top Rap Artist”. The Six God was also nominated for “Top Artist”, alongside fellow Northerners The Weeknd and Justin Bieber. If you're unfamiliar with the awards, that's three Canadian artists out of five nominees for what is arguably highest recognition on the American show. Not bad, Canada.

Speaking of Bieber, leave it to the Statford, Ontario native to not leave empty-handed, as he took home two awards, “Top Male Artist” and “Top Social Media Artist”, in addition to performing a super two-hit combo with “Company” and “Sorry”. The stage was also set for Shawn Mendes, who earned his spot with a performance of his jam “Stitches”. From new faces to established stars, Céline Dion had an emotional night as she was presented with Billboard’s Icon Award by her son René-Charles, dedicating the moment to her late husband. The music legend was one of three Canadians to perform, mesmerizing the audience with her cover of Queen's “The Show Must Go On”.
