2016 MTV VMA’s Take Manhattan by Storm

By Stan Musial

The stars were out in full force at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City last weekend. Hosts Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key pulled of what can only be described as a cutting satire of millennial culture with their excessive use of #TweetThatTweet and embellished tones to their voices. The resulting product was very funny and very well done. The night began with none other than the ‘6ix God’ Drake winning Best Hip Hop video for “Hotline Bling”. According to presenter Puff Daddy, Drake was stuck in traffic and couldn't accept the award himself, which left everyone watching at home and in attendance scratching their heads.

The live performances were a big reason the show was a resounding success. Rihanna took to the stage on four separate occasions throughout the night, just to make sure that viewers remember that she is the Princess of Pop in 2016. Beyonce, Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas all delivered amazing performances to help steal the show, but the highlight of the evening was Britney Spears. She made her return to the VMAs stage for the first time since 2007, which is a big deal. However, the fact that she was lip-syncing really took away the overall great vibe of the show. Others might disagree, but it is still safe to say that Britney Spears can still draw crowds.

The night came to a close with Drake, who eventually made it to the venue and gave a speech to honour Rihanna. Twitter went nuts with people tweeting to Drake and telling him to just propose to the superstar. In all, the show was a good time for everyone watching; a perfect end to a summer of great music.
